Singer and guitarist Val Storey has performed hundreds of times on the stage of Nashville’s Station Inn, the best-known bluegrass music club in the world. In this program, Storey performs two songs at the Station Inn: “Those Memories of You,” written by the Nashville Bluegrass Band’s Alan O’Bryant, and “Little Mountain Church House,” written by Carl Jackson and Jim Rushing.
In an interview with the Museum’s Peter Cooper, Storey talks at length about her experiences at the club and her times around the people who helped establish the Station Inn as more than just a place to play, but rather a true musical community. Those people include club employee Ann Soyars and club owner JT Gray. The historic venue is the subject of the Museum’s exhibit "The Station Inn: Bluegrass Beacon," on view from January 15, 2021, through January 2, 2022.
“I don’t know that we’d have a Station Inn without JT Gray,” she says of the man who ran the Station Inn from 1981 until his death in 2021. “I don’t know if I’d be doing what I’m doing without a JT Gray.”
Storey speaks about growing up in Roanoke, Virginia, and about her early love for bluegrass, country, and jazz. She also talks about a harrowing motorcycle accident that left her hospitalized for a month. (By her "Live at the Hall" episode's recording, she was back at the Inn, playing Sunday and Monday shows with collaborators including stalwarts Carl Jackson and Larry Cordle.)
