David Grier—a world-class flatpicking guitarist who has impressed some of the giants of American music—talks about his guitar playing, musicians who have influenced him, and more, during a 2021 conversation with the Museum’s Peter Cooper. Grier’s episode of the “Live at the Hall” series also includes three performances from Nashville’s Station Inn: two with his band (“Big Dirt Clod” and “Dark Hollow”), and one solo guitar performance, “As It Rolls to the Sea.”
Like many outstanding acoustic guitarists, Grier has played many times at Nashville’s bluegrass mecca, the Station Inn. Perched in front of the Museum’s exhibition "The Station Inn: Bluegrass Beacon," Grier shares thoughts about the importance of the longstanding live music venue to the bluegrass community. Grier also discusses the foundations of his playing, the richness of the Washington, DC-area music scene, and his experiences and connections with some of the giants of bluegrass, including Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Clarence and Roland White, Doug Dillard, Roy Huskey Jr., and others.
In addition, Grier offers advice on the importance of influences and the crucial value of developing an individual style. The talk is a fascinating conversation about the players and personalities of bluegrass music.
