During this “Live at the Hall” episode, filmed July 2, 2021, Sam Williams discusses the misperceptions that come with being a member of one of country music’s most famous families, and how he overcame his hesitancy to become a musician once he discovered the therapeutic qualities of songwriting. Williams also performs two songs that are personal to him: “Can’t Fool Your Own Blood” and “Happy All the Time,” both from his 2021 debut “Glasshouse Children,” produced by Jaren Johnston of the Cadillac Three.
The youngest son of Hank Williams Jr., Williams grew up away from the spotlight in Paris, Tennessee. Determined to forge a distinctive musical style of his own, Williams began creating moody, deeply felt contemporary songs. His talent drew top-level co-writers, including Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, Mary Gauthier, Jim Lauderdale, and Lori McKenna, and led to a deal with Universal Music Group as a recording artist.
Williams foresaw an independent music career until a “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” performance of “Can’t Fool Your Own Blood,” a song he co-wrote with Gauthier and Jaimee Harris, caught the attention of Cindy Mabe, the president of Universal in Nashville.
