Songwriter, musician, and producer Charlie Worsham shares songs, talks about the inspiration for his 2018 book, "Follow Your Heart: A Guitar, A Tattoo, and One Man’s Country Music Journey," and reads excerpts from that personal project.
Among the songs Worsham performs during this 2018 Songwriter Session and Book Talk at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's Ford Theater: "Young to See," cowritten with Chris Dubois and Lee Thomas Miller and included on his 2013 debut full-length "Rubberband"; "Old Time's Sake," a co-write with Brent Cobb and Jeremy Spillman that appears on Worsham's 2017 album "Beginning of Things"; "Cut Your Groove," written with Oscar Charles and also included on "Beginning of Things"; and then-newer songs "Don't Quit Your Daydream" and "You Make Me Believe in Love."
The book, Worsham says, was ultimately Marty Stuart's fault, and the first "Follow Your Heart" selection Worsham reads partly explains why, tracing his admiration for and first meeting with Stuart, and the souvenir he kept from that meeting.
Worsham—who went on to sing and play guitar and banjo with Old Crow Medicine Show—also talks about how writing that book has affected his songwriting, how his Mississippi upbringing branded itself on his life and his music, and why he's committed to encouraging young talent in Mississippi through his Follow Your Heart Arts program and scholarship fund.
