Grammy-winning bluegrass group the Del McCoury Band and Americana singer-songwriter Amythyst Kiah perform songs inspired by Dorothea Lange’s photography during a 2019 concert at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Kiah, of the supergroup Our Native Daughters, performs a carefully selected mix of new and traditional folk songs. The Del McCoury Band plays several selections from “Del and Woody,” a 2016 album of original songs built on Woody Guthrie’s then-unrecorded lyrics and McCoury’s music.
While the artists perform, Lange’s powerful photographs, depicting the daily struggles of American life during the 1930s Dust Bowl period, are shown. Lange’s photographs of Japanese-American internment camps during World War II are also highlighted during a video excerpt of the documentary “Searchlight Serenade.”
Kiah and the Del McCoury Band close the show with a performance of Guthrie’s classic song “This Land Is Your Land.”
Presented in partnership with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Frist Art Museum, in celebration of the 2019 exhibition Dorothea Lange: Politics of Seeing.”
