Dillon Carmichael performs five original songs and answers questions about songwriting technique, musical heroes, and his favorite guitars during a January 10, 2019, Songwriter Session at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. He also talks about working with producer Dave Cobb in Studio A in Nashville.
A Kentucky native, Carmichael is the nephew of country artists John Michael Montgomery and Eddie Montgomery of Montgomery Gentry. He landed a publishing deal at eighteen and moved to Nashville shortly after turning nineteen. His publisher immediately set him up with high-level writers to develop both his craft and songs for a debut album. Carmichael released the album “Hell on an Angel” (produced by Cobb) in 2018.
Speaking about those early years, Carmichael says he was often nervous but gave himself pep talks in his truck before writing appointments. “Going in there with confidence and trying to get a great song at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about,” he says. “Really, looking back now, it was the greatest thing that could have ever happened. . . . For me I pretty much right out of the gate got to see how these guys work and I’ve been blessed to be able to write with lots and lots of great songwriters.”
The set list for this performance includes “It’s Simple,” “Hard on a Hangover” (written with his mother and her boyfriend), “What Would Hank Do,” “Dance Away With My Heart,” and “Picking Up Where We Left Off.” Matt Workman accompanies Carmichael on guitar.
