Guitarist and hit songwriter Red Lane—who’s played with and written songs for country music legends including Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty, Dottie West, Keith Whitley, and George Strait, among others—joins the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum here for a Songwriter Session in 2013.
During the program, Lane shares the stories behind his songs and the path he navigated to becoming a sought-after lyrical craftsman. Country Music Hall of Fame member Willie Nelson, Lane says, was not only a major songwriting inspiration, but one of the first artists to record his songs, too.
Lane performs accompanied by his beloved guitar: the signature model he helped the C.F. Martin & Company create for Merle Haggard, who counts Lane as the “third-best songwriter in the world” (Haggard places himself at #2 and Hank Cochran in the #1 spot). Songs include: “Somewhere to Come When It Rains” (Merle Haggard), “Blackjack County Chain” (Willie Nelson), “Darling, You Know I Wouldn't Lie” (Conway Twitty), “Miss Emily’s Picture” (John Conlee), “Would These Arms Be in Your Way” (Keith Whitley), “He’ll Be Back” (Lee Ann Womack), “The Eagle” (Waylon Jennings), “Haven’t You Heard” and “Tell Me Something Bad about Tulsa” (George Strait), and “New Looks from an Old Lover” (B.J. Thomas).
Presented in support of the Museum’s exhibition “Dottie West: Country Sunshine”: November 9, 2012, through May 2, 2013.
