In honor of influential country recording artist and songwriter Hank Williams and marking the 100th anniversary of his birth, “Hank’s 100th: A Concert in Celebration of Hank Williams” showcases a wide variety of country and Americana artists influenced by Williams’s music. The show’s cast includes Country Music Hall of Fame member Charlie McCoy, Suzy Bogguss, Laura Cantrell, Della Mae, Rodney Crowell, S. G. Goodman, Jeff Hanna, Brennen Leigh, Lyle Lovett, Delbert McClinton, Chuck Mead, Wendy Moten, and Williams’s grandchildren Hilary Williams, Holly Williams, and Sam Williams. Among the highlights are renditions of such Williams classics as “Cold, Cold Heart,” “Honky Tonkin’,” “I Saw the Light,” and “Lovesick Blues.” The concert was hosted by Hank’s grandchildren and his daughter Jett Williams, and singers were backed by a house band led by steel guitarist Chris Scruggs. The program was recorded on September 21, 2023, and was presented by Spotify in partnership with the Americana Music Association.
Hank Williams set the standard for country songwriting and is also regarded as one of the most influential and significant songwriters in all of popular music. His music has transcended genres and eras, and has been recorded by hundreds of artists since his untimely death in January 1953 at the age of twenty-nine. Dubbed the “Hillbilly Shakespeare” during his lifetime, he was one of three people inducted into the first class of the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961, along with his producer, Fred Rose, and pioneering country music singer Jimmie Rodgers.
