Hilary Williams—granddaughter of Country Music Hall of Fame member Hank Williams, and daughter of fellow member Hank Williams Jr.—carries on her family’s musical traditions, sharing live songs and stories as part of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Songwriter Sessions series.
Throughout the 2018 program, Williams describes aspects of her five-year road to recovery from a car accident that nearly claimed her life. She continued writing songs during the healing process (which included thirty surgeries), and many of those appear on her 2018 album, “My Lucky Scars.”
Songs Hilary Williams performs during her Songwriter Session include: “Beautiful Things,” about faith and perseverance; “Sign of Life,” inspired by her doctor’s response to pain complaints; “Bedside Manner”; “Crazy”; “Shipwreck”; and the title track, which expresses Williams’s gratefulness to be alive.
Before singing her rendition of Hank Williams’s “A House of Gold,” Williams reveals two near-death experiences after her accident, and visions of being led by the hand to a gold mansion and to her grandparents, Hank and Audrey Williams, who told her, “It’s not your time.”
Hilary Williams also calls to her father Hank Williams Jr.’s repertoire, offering a lighthearted a cappella rendition, upon request, of “Are You Ready for Some Football?,” along with “Old Habits,” from his 1980 album, “Habits Old and New.”
