During this conversation and performance moderated by music journalist Jewly Hight, Americana artists Adeem the Artist, Mya Byrne, Autumn Nicholas, and Allison Russell perform and discuss how they use their platforms as songwriters and musical artists to affect change. This program was recorded on September 20, 2023, and presented in partnership with the Americana Music Association.
Adeem the Artist—from Knoxville, Tennessee—debuted on the Grand Ole Opry in June 2023 and was nominated for Emerging Act of the Year at the 2023 Americana Honors & Awards. During the program, Adeem performs “Cast Iron Pansexual.”
Mya Byrne—who splits her time between New York, California, and Tennessee—released her debut album, “Rhinestone Tomboy,” on the Kill Rock Stars Nashville label. She is the first artist signed to the independent rock record label’s Nashville imprint. During the program she performs her song “Burn This Statehouse Down.”
Autumn Nicholas has won several North Carolina–based songwriting contests, has performed at CMA Fest’s CMA Close Up Stage and the Newport Folk Festival, and is a member of the Black Opry. Nicholas performs “Even If I Fail.”
Allison Russell has been performing in duos and groups since the late 1990s but didn’t release a solo album until “Outside Child,” in 2021. After winning Album of the Year at the 2022 Americana Honors & Awards, she was nominated for two awards, Artist of the Year and Song of the Year, at the 2023 ceremony.
Russell performs her song “Tennessee Rise” during the show.
