Buddy Spicher, National Fiddler Hall of Fame inductee, three-time IBMA award winner, Grammy nominee, and Nashville A-list musician, discusses his career with Bill Lloyd as part of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s “Nashville Cats” series.
Spicher has displayed his fiddle virtuosity on the stage, television, movies and in the studios of Nashville, playing country, western swing, folk, jazz, and popular music for artists as diverse as Rosemary Clooney and Faron Young, Ray Price and the Monkees, Henry Mancini and Loretta Lynn, and Bill Monroe and Gary Burton. A member of legendary Nashville groups Area Code 615 and the Super Pickers, Spicher’s fiddle traces the history of country music from early hoedowns to international appreciation.
Spicher begins by relating how hearing Cowboy Copas on a battery-powered radio inspired him to play the fiddle, and his arrival in Nashville through the urging of Audrey Williams. He talks of the impact of Mom Upchurch’s storied boarding house on his playing and reminisces on legendary fiddlers that helped shape his career. He tells of how collaboration with pedal steel guitar player Weldon Myrick, a Guarnini violin, and advice from his brother produced the haunting fiddle on Linda Ronstadt’s “Long Long Time.” The program is interspersed with musical clips, beginning with a spirited rendition of “Back Up and Push” and highlighting Spicher’s contributions to recordings by Hank Snow, Johnny & Jack, Faron Young, Charley Pride, Loretta Lynn, the Monkees, the Steve Miller Band, Elvis Presley, Dan Fogelberg, Linda Ronstadt, Bill Monroe, Gary Burton, and Spicher’s own compositions. Spicher, joined by Billy Contreras, closes the program with a demonstration of twin fiddle playing.
