Singer-songwriter Lindsay Ell performs a mix of her singles and unreleased songs, including “By the Way,” “Criminal,” “What Does You Good,” and “Don’t Call Me Lonely,” and answers audience questions during a 2016 Songwriter Session at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
The program is presented in support of the exhibition “American Sound and Beauty: Guitars from the Bachman-Gretsch Collection,” a curated display of over seventy rare and antique Gretsch guitars assembled over decades by singer-songwriter Randy Bachman of the Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Ell discusses her relationship with Randy Bachman, an early mentor and producer of her first album, and recalls having seen and admired many of the guitars in the exhibition as a teen.
“I started playing guitar at eight years old,” she says, accompanied by her own favorite Gretsch, the “Red Betty.” “. . . This thing pretty much became another limb off my body.”
Ell also performs on the piano, sharing new composition “Eyes Off You” and discussing how her lack of formal training on the instrument can be an advantage in unlocking new songwriting ideas.
“American Sound and Beauty: Guitars of the Bachman-Gretsch Collection”: on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum January 15, 2016 through July 17, 2016.
