The Songs of Eric Church • Writers’ Round, 2016
Special Programs
•
1h 18m
During this songwriter’s round at the Museum, Casey Beathard, Jeff Hyde, Luke Laird, and Jeremy Spillman—who have all co-written hit singles and album cuts with and for Eric Church—share stories of co-writing with the platinum-selling country singer. An Eric Church observation all four share: He consistently knows exactly what type of songs he wants to record.
Jeff Hyde, who toured with Eric Church as a banjo player, performs the hits “She Got A Rock (I’m Getting Stoned),” “Cold One,” and “Springsteen,” which he co-wrote. Before performing “Sinners Like Me,” Jeremy Spillman talks of writing the song with Church, and also sings “Hell on the Heart” and “A Man Who Was Gonna Die Young.”
Casey Beathard performs “Homeboy,” a song inspired by his two oldest sons, written from the perspective of the oldest to his younger brother. Beathard also sings “Wrecking Ball” and “Like Jesus Does” (the latter of which is among the few songs Eric Church has recorded that he did not write or co-write himself).
Luke Laird recounts being on the road with Church, and seeing people in the crowd drinking from red Solo cups—the inspiration for “Put a Drink in My Hand.” Laird also sings "Talladega," and closes the round with “Give Me Back My Hometown.”
Presented in support of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum exhibition “Eric Church: Inside the Outsider” (September 18, 2015, through February 21, 2016).
