Charlie McCoy, harmonica virtuoso, multi–instrumentalist, Grammy, CMA and ACM award winner, and a 2009 inductee to the Country Music Hall of Fame recalls his career in a 2006 interview with Bill Lloyd as part of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Nashville Cats series.
As a Session musician, band leader, music director, and recording artist, McCoy is known for his versatility and has worked with artists as diverse as Perry Como and Bob Dylan. A member of legendary Nashville band Area Code 615 and music director of television show “Hee Haw” for 19 years, McCoy’s harmonica can be heard on classic country songs “He Stopped Loving Her Today” recorded by George Jones, “The Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line” recorded by Waylon Jennings, and “Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine” recorded by Tom T. Hall.
Beginning with the story of how a cereal box spurred him to buy a harmonica, McCoy tells stories of his music and the artists he encountered. He describes how a trip to the 1965 World’s Fair led to his playing guitar on Dylan’s “Desolation Row,” and how a Florida disc jockey’s selection of a song to play as a lead into the news brought him a #1 record and Grammy award. McCoy closes the interview with brief live performances of “Shenandoah” and “Amazing Grace.”
