Drummer Jerry Pentecost—who plays for Old Crow Medicine Show, Amanda Shires, and Brent Cobb—performs, shares insights into country and Americana drumming, takes questions from the audience, and welcomes well-known friends and collaborators during a Musician Spotlight at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, held during 2018’s AmericanaFest.
A 2018 Americana Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year nominee, Pentecost maintains a philosophy that the drums should enhance the song and not dominate the sound. To illustrate, he welcomes a mix of singer-songwriters to the stage, including Ashley Wilcoxson, Lauren Morrow, Ron Pope, and Amanda Shires. With Seth Plemmons on guitar and Jay Weaver on bass, performances range from original songs—including Shires’s song “Charms” from her “To the Sunset” album—to covers of Linda Ronstadt’s “When Will I Be Loved,” John Prine’s “Far From Me,” and Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again.”
Pentecost and Amanda Shires also reminisce about Shires’s husband, Jason Isbell, being integral to Pentecost becoming her drummer and band leader. Pentecost closes the show with the “Nashville Shuffle,” an instrumental originally by the Texas Troubadours.
