Adam Wright—who’s written songs for Lee Ann Womack, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, the Lonesome River Band, and many other major country and bluegrass names—shares some of his songwriting highlights and intimate details about his music career during this 2018 Songwriter Session at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Accompanied by a Gretsch parlor guitar, the songwriter, producer, and member of country duo The Wrights opens by performing “Thunder and Lightning,” a 2016 International Bluegrass Music Awards “Song of the Year” contender that was recorded by bluegrass veterans the Lonesome River Band. It was “kind of a cheap shot pitching a moonshine song to a bunch of bluegrassers,” Wright says of the track. “They can’t help it. Whether they like it or not, they have to cut it.” He also performs “Mayhayley’s House,” another cut by the Lonesome River Band, based on the true story of self-proclaimed oracle Mayhayley Lancaster.
Lee Ann Womack’s 2017 album “The Lonely, The Lonesome & The Gone” features several Wright songs, and he performs two: “End of the End of the World” and “All the Trouble.” The latter, co-written with Womack and Waylon Payne, garnered a 2018 Grammy nomination for “Best American Roots Song” and a “Song of the Year” nod from the Americana Music Association.
Before performing “The Older I Get”—a single recorded his uncle, Country Music Hall of Fame member Alan Jackson—Wright discloses that it was the tenth draft of the song, co-written with friends Sarah Turner and Hailey Whitters, that Jackson finally agreed to put on tape.
Wright rounds out his Songwriter Session with selections from his own recording discography: “From My Bough” and “Born to Dream,” from his 2018 solo album, “Dust.”
